How to avoid scams when selling your phone online
Fake UPI requests, QR codes, courier tricks and fake payment screenshots — how to sell your phone safely.
The most common tricks
- "Scan this QR code to receive money" — scanning a QR code or entering your UPI PIN only ever SENDS money. You never need your PIN to receive.
- Fake payment screenshots or SMS — always check your own bank or UPI app before handing over the phone.
- "I am in the army / out of town, I will send a courier" — a classic advance-payment or pickup scam.
- Buyers who ask for OTPs, remote-access apps or your account details.
- Overpayment: the buyer "sends extra" and asks you to return the difference.
Safe selling habits
- Meet in a busy public place in daylight, ideally near a bank or a mall.
- Accept cash or a payment you can see credited in your own app before you hand over the phone.
- Never share OTPs, never install apps a buyer asks for.
- Write a simple sale note with date, IMEI and price, and keep a photo.
If something goes wrong
Report cyber fraud at cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930 (the national cyber-crime helpline) as quickly as possible — fast reporting improves the chance of stopping the money.
How Valuelix helps
